Seeking more collaboration & high-performance?
Worried that your people aren’t bringing all of their intelligence and that your teams are under performing? How much is this costing your business?
‘Feeling that your voice is welcome’
Only when someone feels safe, will they start to tell you what’s really going on, what they’re worried about, what they reckon could transform output or their innovative idea. People need to feel safe to tell you what they really think, let alone put their wildest ideas ‘out there’.
But actually, it’s not them – it’s their brain!
By studying the human brain, neuroscientists have identified social factors which can trigger the powerful threat response in our brains. Understanding this clearly enables you to give your people what they need as individuals to contribute fully as part of the high-performance team you’ve been dreaming of.
The Academy of Brain-based Leadership have developed the S.A.F.E.T.Y. ™ model from this research to help us understand our own brain’s needs first and then others, so that we can improve our working relationships, interactions and teamwork for higher performance.
How Does Psychological Safety Help in Business?
When business leaders see the humans in front of them and identify human issues in business situations, their teams start to thrive rather than burn out.
Google’s ‘Project Aristotle’ (2015) showed that the key factor in all their high-performing teams was psychological safety. These findings build on Professor Amy Edmondson’s previous Psychological Safety research (1999).
Your people do their best work when they feel comfortable around others.
When people know it’s safe to ask a question, offer a suggestion, critique a plan or talk about a mistake is when we’ve created psychological safety.
Prof. Amy Edmondson refers to this as giving your people ‘Permission for candour’.
Find out how to implement this neuroscience in your business and create happier individuals & high-performing teams.
What is the Psychological S.A.F.E.T.Y.™ model?
The recent breakthroughs in neuroscience have enabled great progress since Professor Amy Edmondson developed the idea (1999) and Google’s project Aristotle’s results (2015) brought the concept of Psychological Safety into wider public domain as the No.1 factor present in their high-performing teams.
Andy is very excited to be one of a few facilitators in the U.K. accredited by The Academy of Brain-based Leadership to deliver Team S.A.F.E.T.Y.™ Debrief days.
