Mental Health Skills for Managers Course

Giving Managers Confidence to have Conversations About Mental Health

This course is for managers at all levels in your organisation. The training gives your managers the knowledge and confidence to spot warning signs, how to prepare for these conversations and exercises to improve their questioning technique and listening skills.

Managers learn what resources are available for their people within the business and how to find trustworthy resources beyond. We always recommend that managers offer options of help to their people so that they feel they have a choice and feel more in control. Encouraging your people to seek appropriate support early leads to better outcomes. When your managers build safety and trust with their people to have these conversations, your people are more likely to speak to a MHFAider® or use the Employee Assistance Programme within the business.

If your goal is to develop a consistent approach to mental health throughout your workplace and to promote healthy performance across the whole organisation, then this training is a key part of your strategy.

The course helps managers to put wellbeing at the heart of their leadership approach, boost employee engagement and create an open culture around mental health and wellbeing. If you are aiming to reduce absenteeism and presenteeism whilst also increasing staff retention, then this course is part of your key strategy.

57% of Companies surveyed in CIPD Health and Wellbeing at work report 2023 hadn’t trained their managers how to support their people with stress and poor mental health, which made this a priority recommendation from CIPD. This course can help you provide the necessary training for your people managers.

We find face-to-face training works best for this course, as managers have such varied experience around mental health issues in business, that they often have lots of questions. Managing group dynamics to share experience for the practical exercises is also better managed in-person. Learners seem to respond better in-person for the practical aspects in this course and supporting each other during the session and afterwards, as they embed their new skills and improve their confidence.
